SLACK CHANNEL NOTIFICATIONS

Setting up notifications in a Slack channel was challenging. The interface was hard to understand at a glance, and the relationship between the various options was unclear. I led a content-first redesign to increase usability and clarity, and align the design with the current Slack design language.

PROGRESSIVE DISCLOSURE

Rather than a complex matrix of selections, the new design offers the user the opportunity to first decide they want different mobile settings before unfurling additional options. Additionally, @here and @channel notifications are nested under @mentions.

 
 

EXPLORATIONS

Generating several content and design layouts helped determine the right level of information density, what options belonged here vs the app’s preferences menu, and the right interaction patterns for additional options.

 
 

MOBILE

While the desktop app allows you to set different settings for mobile, it was also important to ensure the new notification pattern worked on mobile devices.
